Laura Sheldon

Laura is a teacher at Sully Primary School in the Vale of Glamorgan, south Wales, where there is a real writers’ shed overlooking the sea.

Laura was born and brought up in Hillside Crescent in Swansea, around the corner from where Dylan used to live. She has always enjoyed writing stories and spent most of her childhood in a fantasy world. She became a primary school teacher in 2000 and finds lots of opportunities for exploring fantasy worlds with her pupils. She believes that everything is more fun taught in a story!

Mr Mahli's Shed and a ghost named Dylan was a runner up in the Firefly Children's Book Prize 2014 and published in September 2014.

Mr Mahli's Shed creative writing workshops

Laura is very experienced primary school teacher and can deliver the following creative writing workshops based around her book Mr Mahli’s Shed and the ghost of Dylan:

1) An introduction to the poetry of Dylan Thomas using his child-friendly ghost as a vehicle. The children work together to produce their own poems, stealing words from Dylan. (extending vocabulary and teaching poetic techniques)
2) A 'creating characters' session using drama techniques to explore characterisation. Children create their own characters and begin to imagine a series of stories for him/her/it. (developing writing and oracy skills)
3) A Mr Mahli's Shed plot piracy session. Children listen to parts of the story read aloud then use their imagination to take the plot in another direction. Shared writing techniques are used to develop a new chapter before the children begin to create their own. (strengthening understanding of story and sequence)
We have some great creative writing resources to help teach Mr Mahli's Shed in the classroom. Find out more here.
